LUCRAM is a multi-disciplinary centre of excellence and spans over a broad field of research interests within risk analysis and management. The centre is composed of researchers at Lund University within the area.
The origins of LUCRAM can be traced back to the early 1990’s when plans to develop a Master’s programme in Risk Management and Safety Engineering were born.
As the topic Risk Management and Safety Engineering is inherently cross-sectorial there was a need for multidisciplinary research to support the education programme. In addition, the societal need for an organized multidisciplinary research effort in the risk and crisis management area was raised by researchers of different disciplines inside the university. Several departments expressed their interest in participating in a multidisciplinary centre and in 1998 LUCRAM was formally founded. Chairman of the board was MD Nils Stormby and director and deputy director Professors Sven Erik Magnusson and Roland Akselsson.
In 2005 Kurt Petersen was appointed full professor of the newly established chair of risk and safety studies and director of LUCRAM. Together with a new board he started a new dynamic phase in the history of LUCRAM.
In 2012 the principal of Lund University decided that LUCRAM should expand and consist of representatives from each faculty at the university and led by a board of 12 members, appointed by the principal of the Faculty of Engineering.
